My Open

February 27, 2015

While CrossFitters across the globe are participating in the 2015 Reebok CrossFit Games first Open Workout (aka 15.1), I’m trekking up to Springer Mountain (GA).

I’m hiking the approach trail that starts at Amicalola Falls State Park and consists of 604 steps to the top of the falls before continuing on another 7.7 miles before reaching the summit of Springer Mountain.

The approach trail is optional when thru-hiking the AT, although there is much debate about that. I’ve been granted the privilege of hiking the approach trail thanks to ‘serendipitous’ circumstances (not being able to get a ride to Springer Mountain). The trail has been dubbed ‘a killer’ and some have said, “If you can make it to Springer on the approach trail, you should have no problem making it to Maine.” That statement is of course, bullcrap, because after that approach trail, there are 2180 miles across some of the most difficult terrain to conquer. The trail is nonetheless, exceedingly difficult (supposedly).

“If you can make it to Springer on the approach trail, you should have no problem making it to Maine.”

My 15.1 will consist of carrying a 36-pound pack up the above said terrain, climbing well over 2000 feet. I may not be doing any toes-to-bars, deadlifts, or snatches, but I have my work cut out for me. We’ll see how I do.

Best of luck to all doing 15.1! I’ll be thinking about you as I climb, doing my own aerobic powered, oxygen deprived workout.
