The not-so-solo not-so-thru hike

May 31, 2015

Hello again. Remember me?

Red Pack is walking again. I’m returning to the trail, however it will be the not-so-solo, not-so-thru hike. As you may recall, things went very wrong with my attempt to do an Appalachian Trail solo thru-hike (see ‘When Things Go Wrong‘). I’ve finally come to terms with everything and accepted that shit happens. I’ve tried to equate my demise to the misfortunes of athletes who spend years of training only to be injured in the finals and watch their dreams squashed in an instant (kinda like Julie Foucher did this weekend at the Reebok CrossFit Central Regional, partially tearing her achilles tendon and ending her chance to compete in the CrossFit Games https://www.facebook.com/CrossFitGames/videos/909158889125970/). It just happens. I know, I’m being over dramatic, but whatever it takes to make myself feel better…right?

Tomorrow, I leave for Virginia on a practice hike that consists of about 120 miles. I’m hiking with a good friend of mine, who is a very skilled hiker and has completed her own Appalachian Trail thru-hike in 2008. We met last year on the AT and she was one of the inspirations to endeavor to perform my own thru-hike. I’m so excited to have the opportunity to do a long-distance hike with her.

We are in the midst of planning a bigger adventure, however so as not to jinx myself again, I’m keeping it a secret until I’m actually doing it. You will just have to stay tuned to find out what’s coming!
